Fungal Nail Treatments – Types

Toe infections are very difficult to treat because the nail is coated with keratin, which is essential for preventing fungal infection. You can help prevent toe fungus by wearing sandals, or otherwise keeping your feet dry. Topical antifungal drugs are ineffective against the species of dermatophyte fungi that cause this infection. Fungal Nail Treatment

You may have one or two fungal nails, instead of a whole nail. Many people don’t notice any difference in their toenails until the nail changes shape and becomes brittle or crumbling away. This type of fungal nail is called tinea unguium. This usually occurs on the underside of the nail, where it is warm and moist. If left untreated, the infection will spread under the skin of the nail and destroy surrounding healthy tissue. The first step in treating a nail infection is to get it diagnosed.

Athlete’s foot causes the same symptoms as tinea unguium, but it’s more common in older adults. It’s a common problem with people who live and work in crowded spaces such as locker rooms, showers, spas, pools and public showers. Nails that become brittle or crumble away are also associated with this fungal nail infection. Treatment involves application of antifungal creams or ointments and may also involve the use of plastic or metal clips to keep the nails off shoes and boots. If it’s not possible to stay indoors, a physician should be consulted.
