When Do I Need an Apostille?
The need for an apostille depends on the type of document and the country where it will be used. Apostilles are only issued for documents that (a) were originally issued in a country that has joined the Hague Convention and (b) will be used in a different country that also joins the convention. Documents that were not originally issued in a member country require the more extensive process of embassy or consulate attestation and cannot be issued with an apostille.
There are three primary types of documents that will need an authentication or apostille: private documents, state/county-issued documents and federally-issued documents. For each, determine which government agency originally issued the document and follow the corresponding apostille or authentication process.
